[Music] foreign [Music] mm-hmm [Music] oh [Music] bravo welcome back to the horn hangouts everybody um may i introduce you to paola you’ve met you’ve seen her before on other um what we played in our berlin phil concert and you actually photo bought you dive bombed our hang out with stefan do you remember we said paula bring us some tea and you did well played that was klaus valendorff’s new release called brahms’s tear laban his animal life and stefan can you please tell us what that number was called and translated yeah and he’s on the way off the victorian shell on the way to the collect

His pension so a well mute on the way to collect his pension paula and thank you you’re going to join us a bit later just in case you were worried we are all tested negative and um yeah we are considering ourselves one family today because stefan and i have spent the last weeks playing next to each other so anything you got i got was it great to have an audience of one thousand people last saturday a full concert and everybody in the hall was tested on the day on the same day so that was very like it was incredible yeah you just take my yeah

We’re being very arty here today we have this one we have this one you can see my hand sorry about that this one stefan this is your the chef on cam and i thought so that the evening doesn’t get too dry um bone dry wine a bone dry i’ve got a bone to pick with you mate oh i say that’s very pretty oh that’s very nice that’s very nice it’s very nice i just have to show you guys to somebody who’s been very patient here let me go around here yeah this is lucky the labrador who’s taking the bag hello lucky can you say that

Everybody yeah well we couldn’t get lucky in this t-shirt today so uh yeah anyway so and this is what it looks like from this side it’s busy cheers stefan cheers i have to prepare a bit of food um yes what tell us what you are preparing because i have a special guest usually i don’t do a lot of recipes i do a lot of like um as maybe last time was like because the you know ingredients were not very clear so i always like juggle around so this time i actually thought like okay maybe it’s easier if i have like ingredients and a recipe apparently

Um this is not there’s no there’s no product placement but this is really nice now who knows otto lengi in the chat anyone and all you guys it’s not otto langley it’s one word okay it’s but what’s his first name then oh that’s no i’m really on um sorry let me find out oh it doesn’t say okay it doesn’t matter so it’s what we’re doing tonight is these okay this is in the german version but actually it’s called simple in english i made a little mistake chef and when i wrote out apparently michael buckwalter michael thank you for pointing this out i put the the

All the measurements in american and european so sorry about that everybody but um you can translate it i’m sure look at you here okay so what the first thing we have to do is like preheat the oven so okay um that’s what we’re pretty sure 120 celsius i have no idea how much of 500 that is but paula might look it up and google please thank you while you’re doing that i just want to say hello to some people watching it’s amazing to see all so many friends watching the chat now i know the horn hangouts went a bit quiet because um well basically everybody

Started streaming everything about everything about their day and their warm-ups and then everybody was streaming everybody else’s warm-ups and going to everybody else’s warm-ups and it just it was an overflux i mean it was great everyone was very entertained but um yeah but we’re just going to start doing these like stripes into the origins right so right straight like that striped but we are back today and we are back exactly one year stefan you were in your little studio here and we had the very what was the very first of 33 corona horn hangouts and it’s so lovely to see you all on the chat

Today um really it’s incredible uh marco from berlin um rachelle hi rochelle brenda hi brenda so many alexandra hunningsberg ricky francis so many great people watching today that we’ve just yeah you’ve become family for us as well ricky ricky ricky you should be practicing ricky should be practicing ricky ricky on saturday i have someone else here that hasn’t seen you all for a very long time and i would like to um say a big hello and i hope he’s going to join us now in the chat there he is hello good morning hi too a horn hangout wouldn’t be the same without you it really

Wouldn’t it just feels right to set my alarm nice and early and roll out of bed to hang out with you guys we’re fine we’re out of lockdown and life life is getting back to normal in melbourne which is which is really really great good fingers crossed it stays that way to see you what would you like to see happening with the horn arrows because in the last year everything posted everyone posted everything oh stuff on quickly stefan has something to do oh yeah we have to cut those things we have tried builder jeans and we cut them in about two centimeters straight that’s very

Easy just cut them put them in it before all that that’s you can just talk about okay right got it okay back to tim tim everybody streamed everything this last year absolutely so much streaming going on there was a lot of great stuff um there was a lot of too much sharing i found and and we went a bit quiet because we were like okay where does the horn hangouts go from here you know um what should we do how should we carry on because everybody has interviewed everybody about everything now so i suggest yeah i i i think what’s been missing is um sort

Of that horn hangout vibe where everyone’s talking together in the chat and i think it’s really important that people know that horn hangouts it’s not just about what we do it’s about everyone who’s watching as well and what they want to see what they want to talk about and having that real interactive community which makes the horn hang out so great that’s what i like anyway i agree should we ask everybody to write in the chat what they would like that would be really great to know wouldn’t it absolutely i think it’s up to everyone to say what what they would like the horn hands

To be and then we can we can take it from there that’ll be fantastic tim you’re going to keep watching keep watching i’ll turn my video off but i’ll be here watching i look forward to seeing what happens great thanks for joining us thanks oh so we have uh i’m sorry um tablespoon of salt okay on top of the aubergines and about four tablespoons of peanut oil say everybody what happens if someone’s allergic to peanuts don’t eat this oh you can also you can also take like other vegetable oils that are not too fruity okay i knew it’s causing me feeling very hot in here

I can tell you that [ __ ] nice and cozy well it was either him or you or paula anyway [Music] sorry anyways moving swiftly along yes swiftly along so next thing sorry next thing it’s very this is very quickly we have a lot of time after we do that um just put these on a baking tray with some baking paper um quite easy stefan is going to take some horn questions but we’re just getting the aubergines in the oven otherwise i won’t get anything to eat yeah it’s 45 minutes in the oven so we have 45 minutes of corn nerd but yeah there’s some

Other things to prepare for a lot so we just put this like like this with the salt and then oil into here and then we forget about this it’s hot [Music] and they will get quite brown so that’s nice okay great so what’s the next step um the next thing is like we have a bit of time so i thought like i would make something because now it’s already nine o’clock in the evening and you’re very hungry and i’m very hungry very are you something in between my mom said hello mom say hello to my mom hello mom that’s a nice other language restaurant in

London ah okay two three i’m sure it’s closed right now and um for now so i didn’t write this down but i just wanted to do some um some nice little crackers with a bit of tapenade that sounds good olive thing and maybe some like goat cheese on top of it that sounds very nice thank you that sounds very very nice um heidi vessel is here too is watching heidi hello heidi nice to see you um my arm is about to fall off here so i might uh i might ask for a bit of help in a minute it’s all right for now so um

Yeah back to horn hangouts we would love to to hear from you um how you’ve been doing it’s been literally a year i mean we had some hangouts since but a year since that day i remember it was just a few days after lockdown had started worldwide and um and i we all thought god were gonna die next week it was a very strange feeling and um for feeling completely helpless and not really knowing what else i could do we started uh streaming every night and talking about all things horn there were a lot of things we talked about with a lot of amazing guests

And um stefan do you have a few minutes could i uh sure i’ll just do the olives i i just a jar of olives somewhere everybody most of them have some some olives but they don’t have stones and they’re they’re really nice we put them with the garlic and now so i’m sorry you have to look away because i know that you don’t eat meat or fish but a bit of fish a bit of fish is okay a tiny as long as it doesn’t look at you is that right that’s right i eat fish is i trish as long as it doesn’t look at me

So this one actually doesn’t look at you because it’s functional it’s got hair it’s hairy um [Music] what do you think what do you think what do you think guys of chiffon’s apron um we actually have a few we haven’t put them in the shop yet and we’ve got a couple of vips who have been wearing them uh michael you’ve got one with your cocktail right now i know i’m sure you’re wearing it um annie basler and dylan um dylan hart got one um so we’ll have to see where we’re going to send them out to next you have to be a huge supporter of

The hangout hangouts to to get a to get an apron but they’re very cool not too much okay not too much lemon zest where are we low and zest we are still on the table so we have olives this little anchovy garlic a bit of lemon zest and actually we can use a bit of olive oil and that’s it okay a bit of olive oil and that’s it good it’s going to get very loud in a minute it’s going to go it’s not oh it looks like it is okay a bit of olive oil like a bit like like you know the french cooks okay

We take a bit of butter so while you’re doing that i have somebody here who i’d love to say hello to is that okay absolutely okay go ahead and that is annie baszler hi annie how great to see let me give you this and we’re just we’re being incredibly technical right now so there we go um yeah can you see it that’s a good shot oh hang on just a second it sounds like a piece by john cage no it’s shifter call annie welcome yes i i heard you talking about your swags here i think the apron is awesome and stefan looks really good in

It and honestly i’m i’m jealous that you’re going to get to eat his food it looks amazing you have to come over i would love to annie thank thank you for joining us um for those of you who don’t yet know the amazing amazing annie buzzer and we had annie on a horn hangout with along with heidi vessel who i think is watching tonight as well um you talked that we talked about beginners and about setting up ambushes and stuff and annie i knew i know you spent the last year teaching a lot of young students online like non-stop and i just wanted to i’m

So glad you joined us because i just i know we have a lot of younger students watching today and also um a lot of really great amateur uh players who love playing the horn um and uh and what how how was it for you what advice do you have for zoom lessons tell us everything you know in three minutes um well i think uh you know i think everybody this year i mean it’s you know it’s it’s been a whole year of learning it’s been an exciting year just to for me it’s opened up a door to teach people honestly all around the world which

Has been actually really fun um and and so i think though you know there’s a lot of sides to what’s been happening um the the few things that i would like to say is i think if i had to divide what’s going on into kind of four categories what i would say is i think there’s some people who really feel confident in their goals they’re super motivated they’re fixing things they’ve got um you know they’re they’re working on on their own playing they’re improving things they have their places to play performance goals and i think that crowd of folk you know is doing really really

Well um quite honestly during this year they might be able to i’ve worked with some students who are really making a big difference in some of their own playing and that’s been super exciting to see um i think the second column that some people are falling into is more of like an unmotivated column and you know how do i get back on this train of of maybe they’re out of shape um maybe they’re falling into some kind of different um things that i say kind of come up with us playing all around they’re not playing with people maybe their ears are getting a little bit

Lazy dynamics are getting lazy um you know just being really motivated to practice maybe taking a lot of time off and then people go through cycles of both if that makes sense and so um i i was curious sarah if if you don’t mind me asking y’all since you just did your concert with the 1 000 people that came to the hall i know y’all been you know streaming the whole time but how is it how is it for y’all because i think that’s a question i’ve been getting is how do we go back from the pandemic and do you mind me asking both of

You how what you know what was that like oh it was very emotional wasn’t it was really really really very immortal but also in a way it was like because the the acoustics changed so much um we were not used to that in your because usually we play like three concerts a week and we are used to that now we’ve played four months uh like 140 days yeah just one concert yeah just just which is a lot more than a lot of people but i mean the usual the usual streaming concerts with an empty hall feel totally different and also you play totally different that

Is really it is a big difference yeah it was very very emotional um i actually lost it when i got out of the car and came around the corner and saw the people standing in front of the philharmonie it was like aliens had landed it was such an unusual uh view it was you know we got so used to just coming to work by ourselves you know and then going in and then we we create the atmosphere ourselves and the other thing that was completely new was actually as an orchestra going on stage together because we’ve been doing digital concert hall live streams and um

And and and so we’ve all just been sitting on stage and waiting waiting for um waiting for the concert the stream to start but to actually go on stage together hear that applause i lost it again i’m afraid i just i totally lost it it was very emotional but then i thought actually what times are we living in that we have to get so excited about playing for an audience it should be every day well i think what’s it’s fun to watch is y’all kind of set a standard i hope for the for the world honestly that this can start up again and i mean

Did you feel like in terms of just nerves did you feel a different kind of nerves i mean obviously it was emotional but because i’ve that question has been asked of me so many times from students stefan doesn’t feel nervous he just gets on with it and i’m nervous for both of us but but sort of like in in ways it was very different to the concerts we did just online and it’s just a very different feeling and you feel more like attention in your body after the concerts like wow actually that is because you want to give more and the people are there it’s

Like it’s really like oh it is yeah it’s a very different thing so it’s yeah it is it’s just the energy of the audience makes you it was it was sort of like we were carried even though i was a little bit nervous we were still you know you still felt everyone was was playing the hearts out literally playing the hearts out oh i say oh look at this guy just top the ritz cracker with a bit of this olive thing and uh and you want some [Music] yum [Music] thank you i hope you can all hear that that zoom how are you guys doing

Out there talking about yourself it keeps moving to sarah’s audio we have a problem with that um um we’ve got jakub looking at looking flat yeah we’re working on that sorry guys we’re working on that i’m not quite sure why it keeps moving to my audio but we’re working on it but you can still hear what we’re saying and i hope you can hear um is annie if there’s a question are you related to paul godzilla uh paul bassler who is we have a different second letter a and o but uh no but we we have joked about it he’s at university of florida and

So we’ve had a good joke about that um i wanted to ask you sarah too one of the other big things i’ve been hearing from students and i think this is a little bit of a a a big issue but you know folks are coming back from being out of shape and i was just curious how do you and stefan deal with deal with that i mean i have my own thoughts but i would be curious how y’all come back from that um yeah well we were very lucky because we actually didn’t stop playing we were we were so incredibly lucky to have that um

Luxury like keeping if you come here no i think i think it was well the luxury was to have this last last second lockdown to have all the consoles we didn’t have the first lockdown we didn’t play that much as we did now because with the distances and so on but now with this with the new concept like being tested at least twice a week we could like play in a distance of one meter in the strings and 150 in the winds what is actually not that much further away as we usually do normally it sits away three meters you want to sit far away

From him because you yeah because of the garlic um so um by now i want to be three meters away from your dog are you he’s begging he’s going there but of course the first time was really hard and i i think this this time when we did all these first hangouts like three times a week we didn’t work no that was tough to keep and it was really tough but that kept us in shape didn’t it because we were we were thinking we were talking about the tubes every day we were talking about warm-ups so i would actually maybe practice because i would have

Been embarrassed otherwise we tried all things yeah yeah we tried out all sorts of things so i mean annie i think we’re all of us all of us watching the stream who are who are horn players or brass players or whatever um we all have we all suffered from this small room syndrome you know this uh sound one sound wise we all really suffered and um i i feel that on stage too i have to work really hard to get my my sound open and and i went on stage with paula the other day and made her play um made her play like without without

Her hand in the bell just to get the sound to project and to visualize also that’s a good visualization you shut your eyes imagine you’re playing on a big stage and playing you open your eyes and you are pillow money you can ask paula yeah i will i i’m going to ask kyle about how that was but um but andy you did an amazing job over lockdown you really did and you you’ve been teaching for a year and dylan you too have been like are dylan and henry watching i think i think henry might be asleep but i think dylan is watching so we have

A two-year-old [Laughter] um yeah what what did you find were the biggest what was the biggest challenge for the younger ones keeping motivated yeah i think i think keeping motivated making sure that you’re you know you’ve got a lot of performance goals set up i know we talked about that in an earlier hangout um but it’s you know it’s is trying to find competitions that everyone can um take part in uh to find places that they can play different events that they can you know sign up for and even if they’re online um and so i think you know just the performance goals are really

Important like you’re saying the small room um syndrome is definitely a thing i that looks so good um that you know that i i’ve even told my students i don’t know if this helps but like change rooms like you know if you’re practicing in your bedroom where the sound’s being eaten up go to your bathroom you know whatever whatever you have to do to change the room um and and another big thing i’ve found as well is that students have a hard time with the dynamics just making sure they’re you know because i think when you’re playing with other folks you really try to match

The level and the energy they’re playing with and we don’t have that right now um and so i think you know just making sure you’re you’re trying to play out of the dynamic box as well is really important annie thank you so much it’s really really great to see you i want you to be here to have dinner with us it’d be great if you could join us again i love it great to see y’all and i wish i was here to try your food staphon have a great day bye goodbye lots of love thanks oh it’s so lovely oh yeah we have two sorry

Now okay because we have the yogurt here the yogurt so how are we doing we are doing a bit of grated of the lime yeah just grate the skin okay hmm a nice smell coming out okay um oh mario’s just asked me something can i quick answer why do you think there were too many recordings published i didn’t say there were too many recordings i i i said um there were there was so much being published and being broadcast that um that we just took a step back with the horn hangouts and and decided to just sort of wait and see until we felt you

Know there was a time where or maybe people were getting back to their normal lives and we could be more of a help there was just it wasn’t that it was too much sometimes it was too much for me but everyone you know everybody you know what i mean it was uh it was a busy time online and um i think it’s a very important part of being a student is to know what’s good for you and what’s not just because somebody says this is what i do doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the right thing for you to do so i think it’s very important to

Filter what you’re seeing don’t you reach stuff on absolutely absolutely yeah it’s very hard to find out these days like a student you see so many you have so many different informations from different people and of course we have started like were you ever running out of like not ideas but i mean like it was a bit like then the questions came again how best to warm up and they were slinging like oh i’ve done all that just watch them you know they were there out there and of course it is it is a bit like after a while you you do you do this

And then you talk about this again and again it’s like i think i think that lime juice limes is one of the best smells on this planet yeah lime just smells of summer and of cuban mojitos and all that stuff just the best now anyway um yeah have a look at this guys from cuckoo lucky what you’re doing what you’re doing lucky you having a good time what’s going to eat what you’re doing you good boy yeah he’s a bit sleepy we should go a bit further away because yeah well anyway okay um jacqueline rainey is watching hi hi jacqueline um in english is turmeric

Turmeric yeah this one yeah this one that one powder a curry powder i chose a thai curry powder that is not too spicy okay so we do like a spoonful of that just a spoonful of curry powder powder okay and then if you hear hear a funny noise it’s this somebody what do you want lucky you want something to eat yeah oh and while we’re down here look what do you think of those are they cool or are they cool or are they really corny somebody sent me these and locked down yeah a little bit lucky nice pretty nice yeah good we’re back here we’re

Back here we have a bit of salt we put some fresh all right i know i use a bit of rock red these red peppers they are really nice yeah okay but like a real red pepper not these ones the flavory ones but the real ones the ones that make stephanie silsie’s head go red no this is that’s chillies no this is just like peppercorns but then they are very different to usual ones so he can eat very very hot food hot spicy food no no stefan jay can i i’m i’m my somebody asked earlier what what what to avoid as a horn player like

Before concerts yeah nuts nuts nuts nuts don’t eat nuts before a concert they get in your teeth and i’ll tell you something else i ate before rehearsal last week and i never will again an energy ball you know those little little these little balls of date fig sort of mushy things that have coconut around them i thought great that stayed in my teeth for literally all day so many dates because they have these little seeds you can’t yeah it’s very like dry dates as as a low-born player i appreciate it if um i don’t have to be near too much garlic i don’t appreciate that

I like garlic so i know but you know you you nobody blows on to you stefan because you are blowing down the line don’t don’t eat the pepper no no no no lucky no pepperoni um just quickly back okay quite a lot of peppa it’s very professional here um back to um heidi said what good is an overwhelming i mean i know what’s what i like to do and how to play so i could i saw some things and i thought oh great ideas i saw other things and thought okay maybe not such a great idea for me um it was a lot of people

Put a lot of content out there most of it for free which is also was tough for freelance musicians that goes in the fridge that’s mixed quiet right they’re good spicy mmm very nice not very spicy not very spicy oh it is a little bit oh my goodness um and i think i mean of course there was so much so much great stuff um but i i’m a bit tired of a cappella videos doing them people like oh why don’t we just come and play this in our living room but occasionally it’s fun at the beginning everybody did everything is it spicy i always said

No alcohol on a horn hangout but i took the only liquid thing near me apart from the water the flowers are in um oh that’s very nice annika said the contents of the horn hangouts didn’t matter as much as a sense of community that we created that’s nice that’s very nice of you to say it was very important for us as well to feel connected with all of you because it was a weird time wasn’t it i mean now we’re also it still is but now we’re all sort of used to it but it is still a weird time so i’m not saying there was

Too much out there every it was enough for everybody to go around for me it was occasionally i couldn’t look at my feeds because it was just like another horn video um but uh yeah there wasn’t enough time to do all the warm-ups and try out all the things i know i agree but write write in let us know what your favorite things were what you would recommend um what you had fun doing apart from the horn hangouts of course of course um how how are you doing because um otherwise i would give you this um i’m now actually just i have to cut onions

Okay can you stay over there yeah i’ll stay away okay and um i was wondering paula paula paula do you say polo paula both um where is a good place where would you say is a good place for us to stand [Applause] i’m gonna put my tongue okay um let’s go let me see come in here no come over here over here we’ll come here okay how about here okay here next to something you come over here with us okay now are we all are we all in the shot no we’re not no we’re not can you go over you go that way okay and

Remember all negative tested and everyone’s fine all right i’m just leaving just cutting cutting these onions in slices and that’s it and then put it so you are here everyone and that’s our camera everyone meet paola do you say paolo paula okay and um you are from estonia yes and you are our member of the one of the two members of the academy and uh you guys got extended though didn’t you we did uh everybody got a four-month extension which was really really generous and we are all super happy about it that’s really good because literally you spent almost this last almost all of this

Year practicing which was actually great because a lot of people didn’t have rooms to practice in yes we’re also very lucky with that yeah so what what was your routine every day you you didn’t really see many people did you no i mean last spring i was mostly in in finland where i i also lived before i came here but now yeah this season i’ve just practiced at the field and gotten lots of lessons from both of you which i’m also lucky to have and yeah it’s pretty much it and i also got to play a couple of weeks in the occasion now this season

That’s true if you look on the digital sorry i’m really struggling with this chili con is gone it’s gone down this this hole now excuse me good thing we did the test today otherwise people will be worried um yeah so um actually i could do like this i could have you here chef how’s that i’m sorry um paula tell me give me a little bit of water your chili whatever has gone down my throat um so tell me what we had this one lesson when i said your sound’s not going anywhere yes how did that feel when i told you that i i felt exactly

The same it feels like no matter how much air i put through support i use how loud i try to play it stays just eight it doesn’t go to the back row of the hole yeah yeah and yeah i guess it’s just something you have to practice practicing the whole and we also have that opportunity you sneak in there when it’s dark yes i called you the i when i thanked shafan um i caught you there i i was it was all completely dark it was on a sunday morning and and i hear master singers of nuremberg the third act the the poor good singer

The fight scene though i was like someone’s on the stage in the dark it must be paula [Music] get that air going what has helped you i think it’s uh well one partition [ __ ] i didn’t say anything my wonderful teacher i don’t know visualizing like getting the sound screws one thing also taking the hand out of the belt which we tried and that helped a lot um having the throat open everything is open not screaming at all yeah and just just playing in the hall and trying to really listen like what’s coming back yeah yeah that’s good um and what’s the plan for

The academy now you’re able to play together because you’re tested yes um we do uh one project the one approximately and then now we have this uh chamber music marathon coming in april uh it’s a three or four hours one concert we’re gonna play lots of chamber music stuff [Music] well great thank you so much and i’m going to be helping us eat and um can you now take this because my arm is right before yes oh great and we’re gonna we’re gonna go back around here we’re going to pull over later yes when she gets to eat okay i’m going to go to the

Questions a little bit um ricky has asked what do i eat when i’m at places where the food is all spicy like sichuan yeah that’s uh that’s a tough one guys because um yeah a little bit of spicy is okay but that was that was really very spicy um also i put the onions into into the oil and they’re getting like in there staying there in there for eight minutes getting brown on medium to high onions are being fried now um jewel says for a lone soul in the middle of wyoming it’s been a great opportunity to see a gathering of incredible horn players together

That that’s that’s lovely um it’s been very important to me also to um to connect it’s fantastic the people we’ve seen in the country i mean look we just had annie bossa from l.a and and tim hansen tim from melbourne that’s been the the good thing about this lockdown if there has been you know if you could say good things is this feeling of community and this feeling of of being connected and also sharing our worries and sharing our chop problems and sharing our warm ups that that’s i really enjoyed that that’s been a really good thing but now we’re moving forward and getting back

To normal as best we can vaccinations and hopefully at some point and it’ll be really great to hear from you what you would like us to do with the horn hangouts um apart from wear our t-shirts and get stefan to cook in his apartment and uh and share that with you because it’s it’s really it’s very very special um yeah helmut says a wonderful thing is the fun and laughter and the friendships and enjoyment that we do and a great willingness to share so much of course we share so much like stefan’s about to share the wine um there’s been a question stefan from dan

Malloy when is our warm-up book coming out now dan was paying attention he was paying attention um because we our shepherd and i are planning a warm-up but in fact we’ve actually got most of the stuff written down and um we we need our friend shane to help us shane if you’re watching um we need our friend shane to help us with the final stuff to be honest this lockdown has been so incredibly busy for me with all the online things and i brought out a little album in june which took all my time called mozari mambo i don’t know if any of you heard

Of it but it was quite a lot of work to get that out and promote it and so i was that was another reason why there weren’t any horn hangouts because i was teaching chef on how to dance salsa while i was truly simply stupid enough to run for chairman again yes and stefan ended up being chairman of the orchestra so um yeah that was basically a lot um jakob can you just tell me what we’re doing with the cameras where’s the best place where where are my friends are they here or they’re here they’re here okay good i’m just trying to sort that friends

Yeah so stefan became chairman of the orchestra again so i would not want to lead any institution in this lockdown time i mean it’s a huge job stefan it’s um it was when was the election i think october yeah so it was before the second look down i thought this was going to be over and then not came back and we have the second wave and now the third rape is coming we’re like planning and then the planning is like nope cancelled okay and then we tried to plan it differently and that’s canceled two and now it’s like so like and therefore it was very

Very very lucky that we could do the concert and maybe plan other events on that same planning with everybody being tested this concert you can watch on the digital concert hall on april 4th i think right that’s right morning and also i think it’s in the television that’s right tv as well so you’ll be able to see that um thank you margaret for loving mozart mambo it was good fun um louis says when corona is over where maybe we could do a fan meeting you’re all welcome come on over in fact that’s one thing chef or maybe one day we’ll even set up as maybe

A berlin phil horn meeting it’s just annie has to come over and organize it for us because thank you emily thank you annie for offering great great okay don’t don’t show the camera into my practice room there you would see like how messy things are yeah my my studios turned into a sort of show-and-tell there’s stuff everywhere so anyway um i have a very wonderful um new friend organizing one second you were telling me that you know like the secret of how to get almost okay okay so in your life i’m here everybody now i cannot cook i really can’t so when stefan told me

He needed pomegranate seeds i was so happy because that’s the one thing i know about is pomegranate seeds and i’m going to show you or do any of you know you probably all know already because stefan did i was like i’ve got a trick because you know when you cut into pomegranates they go all over the place and they stain your t-shirts and they’re like everywhere you knew this can you cut it okay so here’s the secret if you didn’t know it you would watch it i had a pomegranate in my hand you put the pomegranate in the water and you cut it under the

Water it could be a little bit more water in there okay so break it up take it yeah you see and then i’ll cut one more like that and then we can do this together stefan so you get in there and you go under the water under the water ah that’s fine i don’t want you to another water look like this see look how quick that is see so actually what happens the seeds go down to the bottom yeah and the white stuff stays on and they don’t they don’t they don’t squirt everywhere at all not nice okay now i’m very proud of that a

Very good friend told me that well done it changed my life because i love pony again it seems you know they’re very good for you they’re good for horn players what other foods are good for horn players bananas bananas cheese cheese hamburgers no bananas because of magnesium and calcium and today do you remember what my luisa said you’re you know mary louisa says before an audition you have to have a cheese sandwich that’s when you’re nervous have a cheese sandwich cheeseburger no no no no cheese sandwich with dark bread with dark german bread oh and um that’s very special yeah it’s very specific sauce cheese

I know sliced cheese so um so bananas and cheese are very good for one thing um what else what is sort of calming chamomile tea that’s always good a big boy remember when i come in and i’m like i’m hungry before the concert you’re like you need to eat more pasta yeah that’s right i agree a good bowl of pasta almonds spicy just not too not to say or garlicky for the poor second one yeah if you’re playing fourth one you can eat what you like you can blow it all out the other end so yum okay what else is good for home place what

Do you what do you think is good for home players can you tell us um in the chat what do you think paula what is it in english spinach ah spinach spinach it has lots of iron that is good okay yeah iron is good give me a heavy sound just not raw spinach the raw spinach is not so good why not maybe it’s been a summer get stuck in your team by the camera yeah are you a seeking option no no no no no no no no that’s fine okay i’ll do that okay you can i’m coming back i’m coming back over here ready um

Oh my apron actually okay i’m going back here sorry guys okay bananas hannah says my teachers always tell me that bananas are bad i’m confused now um well bananas are actually very good if they’re not too dry not too dry not too ripe if they if they’re too ripe then they’re too sweet if they’re too green they’re too dry so a good yellow banana well if then if they’re not good for you just because we say they’re good doesn’t mean they’re good for everybody but for us we like to have bananas before a concert and sometimes we have to have pretzels before a concert don’t

We germany dylan says two glasses of wine before a concert um i can’t recommend this and um and uh francis makes yeah it says it makes you feel like bananas are too more calm and oh apparently it’s national cocktail day in the us tomorrow thanks john mitchell it’s good um national cocktail day good well we should have made a cocktail um mia just says mozarimamba always makes me dance and smile great me too um yeah then you don’t have to eat if you don’t like it don’t eat it before playing basically uh which is very good advice from ricky um sushi says alexander i don’t

Know sushi is not really my food before concert is that fun before concert yeah we haven’t fallen out that would be a bit dangerous in case you get a bad one yeah yeah yeah i mean japan would be a problem yeah yeah yeah yeah that’s true um yeah so basically um now stefan is is are you busy are you coming back to us give me a second okay give we’ve got apples karen says apples are the worst things to eat before performance i’m giving this back to my arms really yeah now funnily enough with with apples our our principal trumpet thomas valencia uh who’s now

Playing second trumpet but he was principal trumpet for a long time he told me apples are an absolute taboo never eat an apple before you have to play but i’ve never found that actually since then i i try not to it’s sort of basically stuff that gets stuck in your teeth like maybe pomegranate seeds aren’t so good to eat before no i didn’t really watch the oranges so they’re a bit bit brown blacky that’s fine because they really have to meld in your mouth we just put the almonds in there yeah john says bread now i actually like um a casaba a cheese sandwich before

Before a concert as well but with dark bread not with white friends white bread doesn’t really help much except stop to be feeling hungry what are you doing there chef uh put the elements we have these um what is no uh sliced i answered i asked i asked stefan for the recipe he says shaved almonds i was like i know i can’t cook but i didn’t really didn’t know how to shave almonds um but there are what was the word flaked flake flaked almonds shaved almonds i [Music] stefan is busy stirring and i have a question for me may i answer it jewel dirk says

Tell us how to do that sexy shoulder shake oh with pleasure in rondo alabama well basically you have to be in cuba so that it’s like 30 degrees outside so you have to be wearing like really sort of you know sort of short tops and skirts and basically you just go you can do that you’re a very very good dancer i you’re an excellent dancer so um jewel that was for you because you’re such a great supporter of the horn hangout thank you for that now we have a big discussion going on about apples so um seeds coriander seeds curry seeds just a bit now

If you don’t have this big thing that stuff on whatever you can also do it between two cutting boards or something like if this is done in five minutes okay um cumin cumin cumin okay around the cumin mm-hmm that’s very impressive you know i felt like i did this like a cave man that’s okay so don’t don’t grate them too much just that they really smell okay smell not too much oh nice now i’m not even talking for another half an hour it’s very nice margaret said boy have i missed the horn hangouts me too i like hanging out with stefan and paula and handsome

Very nice and the best thing is i’m getting dinner after this and they wrong and actually because i told you you know you said you wanted to bring dessert yeah and you asked me what to do okay you’re like cooking so like just bring a small surprise oh my goodness look at this you guys oh look at this it’s the easiest recipe of the world it’s frozen raspberries are topped with a mix of um what’s a cream like whipped cream whipped cream sour cream and yogurt and you just put a layer of brown sugar but not brown and then not brown brown sugar like brown

Brown sugar yeah it looks like creme brulee yeah just put it in the in the in the fridge that’s it that’s it yeah that’s it it comes out oh man for a couple of hours i couldn’t do it tonight because it needs the time to oh no i’m so excited it looks amazing well thank goodness i didn’t bring my jelly [Laughter] um dr mark allman is in the chat where is he dr mark are you there dr mark writes something in the chat so i can see you if you have didn’t see this horn hang out with dr mark almond about it was all about

Lungs you have to watch it i must say in all of the 33 horn hangouts that was one of my favorites and i know i say that probably about all the hangouts i’ve ever done they’re all of my favorites but the longhorn hangout was spectacular the star wars hangout was also spectacular um the the global trumpet foreign hangout the global um trombone horn hangout the after party was the best of that gail williams is in the chat as well you did some great hangouts the etude hangout was fantastic as well wasn’t it that was that was really i just had to watch those hangouts once

You never watch them yeah well i i edit them so um i know what happened um oh good there’s one for me lewis said i chewed a piece of cucumber for a few minutes it makes your mouth nice and wet and helps with the with the hot air i tell you i’m not putting a cucumber anywhere near me every cucumber cucumber is the food of the devil ellie mobs is watching hello ellie hello um uh matthew matthew highslip hi matthew dr armand’s chat was one of the was the first round of media was i saw that thank you for for promoting that um and karen

Asked when are we cooking at my place we are not i’m saying this is sort of like more or less finished so we just take them off okay let me get the close-up thank you paula maybe if you have two sensitive hands use a glove okay yes do use gloves and don’t do this at home if it’s hot yeah okay don’t do it your children love them okay that’s pretty bad hey you guys are are we are you all you all seeing this okay um it’s really quite a technical uh uh miracle here what’s going on cause we’ve got stefan’s ipad up here and we’ve

Got the camera here and we’ve got this your chat url here um i think tabitha might be in the chat do you want to say hello to tabitha a good day good day i hope apparently it’s raining really really strongly and there’s somebody that had tabitha for all the people being in australia with the full concerts and opera going on and of course you know it’s a big island so they shut down the borders but traveling there is like you have to be two weeks in a hotel room county and you can’t go and it’s like wow yeah for that you need to stay there

For quite a long time yeah too long come back um while you’re doing that brendan vern is watching brendan is a great supporter of the horn hangouts and he has a question why does he get so much water in his horn now you know it may we empty out our water all the time why you get so much water brennan is probably because you’re not emptying it out enough we all get water in our horn because of the condensation the warm air and i know you you say you fight with your horn you just picked it up again and um it’s been quite a fight

For you and your horn um you need to love your horn more and empty the water out more often because it’s just how it is all horn players have to do plumbing all the time right stuff absolutely water in your horn can really make a result of a plumbing okay yep we finalize that okay so here we go there we go back we go on we have the you know protect the yogurt out of the fridge where it was and do a nice little [Music] yes a lot of yogurt so we can be very generous on that easy stuff what is your favorite dessert do

You love to cook us mature what’s your favorite dessert cook oh the chocolate thing well that was nice that was last time really sort of like melting chocolate things yeah and i love the raspberry thing recipe from my aunt i can’t wait to try that that is really really really nice it’s quite light it’s not so fair there’s no there’s no you know no butter no more it looks like a lot of sugar on top like this small if you want to i mean you can just wait just a second so just put the sorry we just put the lime skin into into the other

Things like mixed on them okay the grated lime into that mortar and pestle yeah i don’t know now we will put we have the mix of almonds rochelle wants to know what kind of knives does stefan use uh mostly japanese knives yes you bought me kittens japanese japanese knives it’s a difference between japanese knife made for westerners and japanese knives made for that people really yes because the ankle of these knives um what they actually do is they they slice mostly like not what we do straight but they slice more like this so the ankle are different and and this one is a that has

Straight ankles so it’s easier but i actually use mostly this one and i have a couple of other ones like whoa don’t do this at home that’s a very big one of mine that’s the thing gave it to me it’s from former taiwanese island oh my goodness and it’s made from bombshells that the chinese fired to the chinese islands bombshells bombshells yeah like and then he the guy is russian vladimir uh vladimir says this is actually russian steel because chinese bought the steel from russia to make the bombs and to fire them up to wine it’s quite scary stuff like this it’s very scary it’s

Very it’s very it’s very good for cutting like big things and even bones because it’s really like sturdy and it’s really okay um nancy from louisiana says lucky always seems like he’s been forgotten about and is dejected on horn hangers nancy lucky does not feel dejected lucky can’t wait until we start eating so now we do a lot of like pomegranate seeds on it so a little bit of color and at the end you just spread our nice spread over maybe a bit too much oh yeah that looks like good oh yum done okay fantastic then that’s it that’s it we’re ready to eat easy

This time it’s very easy we’re ready to eat you said last time was too complicated well it tasted really good but it just went on for like two hours and poor jakob who’s that i remember drinking too much i think it was our private audience behind our guests oh yes looks that’s what we’re having with it we’re having razz by sarah i love it i love it and but crepes means cancer in german yeah but her name is sarah capes oh okay right okay that shows you how much i know you guys right um it’s a cold climate so it’s it’s not it’s not a

Profound australian choice at all it’s very it’s quite light fruity tyler you can find this recipe in the otto lengthy book um oh yeah i can recommend that again we’re gonna i’ll post a picture of it okay on the horn hangout page it’s called simple and there’s a couple of my favorite dishes in there are the easiest ones i’ve ever done really likes very simple it’s the fennel salad in there with lime that’s simon’s favorite recipe sir simon that might be but also there’s the the cauliflower the whole cauliflower yeah the roasted cauliflower right really nice and the roasted um celeriac celeriac one very good

Yeah yeah you just stab it and put like coriander seeds and olive oil and then put it over for three hours and that’s it and you just like brush it with the olive oil a couple of times simple simple the other one the other the other cookbooks of him are like you need a lot complicated very very very seldom like uh herbs and things like oh and it’s quite complicated but this one is fantastic great okay well thank you for that cynthia is enjoying the hangout from boston nice to see you cynthia um nice to see you that’s hard to say well you’ve been you’ve

Been eating chili and nice to see you sincerely you need more driver i do not not now anyway um anika wants to know how old is lucky lucky will be 12 in the summer he is really old lucky are you no boy but he’s still very fast oh boy are you an old boy he’s singing he felt sad he’s happy you’re happy to have some food too put some shoe shine it’s almost see that’s not a dejected dog is it it’s a happy dump that’s a happy dog he’s just happy he didn’t have to wear his horn hangout t-shirt today so now was the question

Like when do we eat soup eating fries no we’re going to say goodbye to eat i just want to say hi to some more people um be from be from saint mary’s school edinburgh lovely to see you um and you were at the halloween horn hangout that was that was a good one too the halloween horn hangout everyone got dressed up that was very cool stefan you finished the food it looks absolutely incredible we’ll be posting photos of it um yeah putting photos of us afterwards stefan what could you just give us some a couple of insider tips like for what for students that have

Been practicing as well everybody was cooking no not for cooking for practice for practicing um for practicing we’ve all been suffering from small room syndrome and annie annie had some great ideas paul also said she she liked the visualization of what we practice of taking the hand out of the bell and just blowing um it is also it is a matter of as a matter of fact you have to practice loud even if you’re in a small room and just gets on your nerves maybe just put your your your plugs in and play it loud for a while because the i think you just need

The muscles and and the stamina fight bear speaks a principal horn and i can i can absolutely um say this is true what stefan is saying and he takes no prisoners if we’re in a hotel room i don’t mean we’re in a hotel room when we’re in our hotel rooms can hear me practice a lot of stuff it doesn’t matter where you are in the hotel you can hear stuff on practicing yeah because it’s top notes because you you need it if we’re on tour and you have to play practice loud in the morning so just do it just go for it and pause contact

Through stop spot hand stopped well i don’t change the the fingerings yeah i i just do the same thing yes yeah exactly it’s a bit weird though but actually it does help yeah um people are sending pats to lucky um maggie says this is your first horn hangout welcome maggie it’s gonna be the first of many um and hanson tim is still there handsome tim are you having fun on the hangout let us know it was so great to see you um we want to brainstorm some more and we want your ideas of what you would like on the horn hangouts apart from more cooking

Um but for now i think um yeah i’ve done a couple of sources today so that we don’t have only this but we have we have um an artichoke um [Music] with a spicy sauce in it we have a nice tuna to enough um cream cheese with capers and we have the olive thing we have rice crackers and we have this and then we have desserts wine and um if sarah wine we have lucky do a long after after hanging out we have paula thank you for joining us and stefan next on the 9th of april richard bissell is going to be our next guest
