Australian National Bank championships 2017 in laest what are you playing what works uh so we got a few Works we’re doing two sections this year open B Junior a fantastic yeah a few of the work such as angels in the architecture the classic yeah yeah lovely work and yeah rest of it you have to listen oh exciting times so tell me a little bit uh you have the

Magnificent Mr James rice conducting how is it sitting in rehearsal with James sort of with the Baton in hand what’s his rehearsal technique like oh it’s very commanding I can beep things out and censor things if you do feel like talking like that he is very very commanding um always expecting the best and he he gets the best out of everyone which is the best thing yeah [Music] why do you play in the bent uh

I just love it the community we have here is awesome uh I’m great friends with everyone in the band fantastic yeah so it’s just you know a great way to meet people and play really good music and what would you say to anyone who might be watching who enjoys playing in concert bands or in brass bands but has never been to a competition before and maybe they’re a bit scared about competing what are the benefits you’d say of going to a competition oh definitely the stage like it’s completely different to playing in a band playing on a stage like it’s just amazing practice um you

Just learned so much up on the stage that you just thought wow I wouldn’t have known that from a rehearsal fantastic and I’ve got a few short um agree disagree statements to run past you all right okay ready um sometimes conductor tells me to do something and I just keep doing what I was doing before agree or disagree oh disagree disagree

I enjoy sitting in uh the audience at band con concerts and contests sometimes depends if the band’s good or not I do a lot of Home practice oh yes agree I love Castle Hill uh agree agree and tell me how long have you been playing with the band to you uh so this will be my second Nationals competition yep so so yeah but it’s a few more years since

I joined we after to Brisbane Nationals okay yes a while ago so yeah yeah and are you looking at continuing with the band for as long as you can be a youth member and then sort of up to the the more adult grade band yeah if if I can if I can do that that’s a plan and is it really tough competition to find a good band to play with around here do you find or or not oh there are there are lots of good bands it’s just a matter of finding the one that works for you so they’re out there just got to hunt

Them down excellent well thanks for having a chat good luck on stage we’ll make sure to get some good Zoomin on you thank you very much thanks for having a chat [Music] the CLE arsol youth wind Orchestra is into its 2022 year originally uh was the city of Sydney uh youth band and uh of course the the founding director was the wonderful

Mr Mike Butcher a name who is uh most most famous with our our banding Community Australian and World banding Community uh Mike uh asked me to come in and fill in a lot throughout 2003 2004 uh and then passed the Baton over to me in 2005 I’ve been privileged to be the uh the ensemble’s director now for last 12 years and uh together with uh the youth wind

Orchestra and of course the northwest wi Ensemble we uh have loved bringing our performances to many a concert stage uh State and National competitions and we’ve enjoyed listening to them as well than you thank [Applause] [Music] you so one final question I I think for tonight what would you say to anyone out there who’s watching who might play in a concert band or play in a brass band who’s never been to a competition and doesn’t really like the idea of

Music being a competitive thing and thinking I don’t want to compete I want to play really good music why do you think competition is important and why do you think the Australian National band championships are a good thing to go to I’m often asked this question and I love sharing my answer uh many of you have probably seen us at many competitions uh what is important of course is the process to get to a great venue and play fantastic music on a day where others are listening you get to share some sense of community of course the adjudicator has a very very important job to

Do and of course let the adjudicator do their job and as bands we should concentrate on just making the very very best sounds and motivating our players whether they be Juniors or seniors whether it be d-grade or a grade it’s a chance to to play to the best of our ability on a concert stage where people are going to appreciate it and if you keep keep your eye on that prize then everybody is a winner excellent well

James thanks so much for joining us tonight best of luck for the competition we sincerely look forward to listening to and watching your performances thank thanks so much Chim I’m really looking forward to it and local viewers thank you very very much hope you enjoy our performances coming up at Easter thank you [Music]
